It's a quick estimate for a simple, box-shaped house — good for comparing options (better windows, more insulation, a tighter house) and for sanity-checking a quote. Size real equipment from a room-by-room load calculation.

Assumptions: square footprint; natural air change = ACH50 ÷ 20; basement walls 2.4 m high losing heat across half the indoor–outdoor difference; no credit for sun or internal gains.
