Measure total rise from finished floor to finished floor. If either floor isn't finished yet, measure to the subfloor and enter the flooring thickness still to come, so every step ends up equal.

The calculator uses the fewest risers that keep each one at or under your max, and splits the rise evenly between them. The top floor counts as the last tread, so there's always one fewer tread than risers.

To lay out the stringer, set a framing square at the riser height on the tongue and the run on the blade, and step it down the board. Trim the bottom drop off the foot of the stringer so the first step comes out the same height as the rest once treads go on.
