Ventilation & HRV Sizing

NBC ventilation rates for a house — principal fan (or HRV) and bathroom and kitchen exhaust. Free, no sign-up.

Every house needs a principal ventilation fan that runs continuously at a set rate, based on the number of bedrooms (NBC Table 9.32.3.3.). An HRV's exhaust side can be that fan — and an HRV is required for the NB Tier 2 points route.

Kitchens and bathrooms also need exhaust (NBC 9.32.3.7.) unless the principal system draws from that room — the kitchen then needs a high-speed boost switch at 2.5 × the minimum rate.
